At MTO, the month of March was dedicated to a single, vital theme: Responsible Forestry. From the selective tree breeding to the precision harvesting in our plantations, every step we take is designed to ensure a sustainable future for the South African timber industry.

Our Foundation of Responsible Forestry

Behind every high-quality timber product at MTO is a foundation of research. Our approach is scientifically driven, focusing on tree breeding strategies that meet both current and future market demands. This research-led process ensures that seed is sourced from carefully managed orchards, where superior trees are selected through our rigorous breeding programme.

Our research teams work directly in the field to identify superior trees— those with the strongest growth, resilience, and wood characteristics. In many cases, this involves climbing more than 20 metres to access the genetic material. Each resulting seed is then planted and nurtured under optimal conditions, ensuring strong, healthy seedlings grown under expert supervision. These seedlings are established in our plantations, forming the foundation of responsible forestry that delivers a consistent, high-quality basket of products to a wide range of industries.

Nurturing the Landscape

Our pine and eucalyptus plantations are guided by responsible forestry practices. We don't just grow timber; we manage ecosystems. By protecting the natural land surrounding our plantations, we ensure the resilience of the environments we depend on. This careful oversight allows us to supply a consistent basket of products to the agricultural, construction, and utility sectors.

Commitment to International Standards

As we moved through our annual audit period in March, MTO remained committed to responsible forestry that meets internationally recognised standards. These annual audits ensure our management is environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable.

Precision Harvesting

The cycle concludes with precision-driven harvesting. Our highly skilled teams and contractors use advanced techniques to selectively fell mature trees while protecting the surrounding forest health. This ensures that the timber we deliver is not only of the highest quality but also harvested with the utmost care for the environment.
