Silviculture Supplier Development: From Subcontractor to Forestry Leader

From subcontractor to independent silviculture service provider, Nwabisa Mpompo’s journey with MTO Group is a powerful example of how our Enterprise and Supplier Development programme creates real opportunities for long-term success.

Nwabisa, owner and director of Bamanye Construction Services, has steadily grown her business through hands-on experience, mentorship, and the support of our experienced foresters. Initially part of our SMME development programme, she gained both technical and practical skills — equipping her to lead her team in providing essential forestry services.

Today, her company employs 18 people and delivers services such as seedling planting, herbicide application, fertilisation, slash clearing, and pruning at our pine plantations in Garcia, near Riversdale (Western Cape) and the Southern Cape region.

In addition to contributing to MTO’s mission of managing sustainable plantations, Nwabisa’s team has undergone comprehensive training in health, safety, first aid, and firefighting — a testament to the professionalism she brings to every project.

"There are tough and good days in managing a business," says Nwabisa. "But I always learn and keep going. My advice to other women in forestry is to be confident and never give up."

This achievement also reflects the strength of MTO Group’s collaboration with Nelson Mandela University (NMU), which continues to support mentorship and capacity-building in the forestry sector.
