At MTO, quality is grown, not just manufactured. We take a holistic approach to our operations, ensuring that precision, technology, and sustainability define every timber product that leaves our manufacturing locations.
From our internationally accredited plantations to our high-tech sawmills and distribution hubs, here is a look at the pillars of the MTO manufacturing process.
The Foundation: Superior Resource Quality
The journey of a high-quality product begins long before it reaches the mill. The logs in our manufacturing plants are sourced exclusively from our own sustainably managed plantations. This vertical integration allows us to process pine logs into lumber with some of the highest density levels in South Africa. When you build with MTO, you aren't just using timber; you are building with superior, verified strength.

Precision Engineering at George and Longmore
George Sawmill (GSM): A powerhouse since 1935, GSM processes a diverse basket of products—including lumber, poles, laminated pine, decking, mouldings, and biomass—built on a foundation of advanced processing.

Longmore Sawmill (LSM): We utilise 3D-scanning technology for pinpoint accuracy in log sorting. This ensures consistent dimensions and superior yield, providing a reliable supply for our clients.

Advanced Technology in High-Quality Timber Manufacturing
Precision is a requirement, not an option. Our tech-driven approach at our facilities ensures that every harvested log is used to its full potential, translating into a product that meets the rigorous demands of the construction and manufacturing industries.
Strategic Distribution: The Retreat DC Advantage
We believe in "Sawmill to Suburb" delivery. Our Retreat Distribution Centre (DC) is the heart of our logistical network in the Cape. As a dedicated Sawmill DC, it offers unmatched variety and scale in one location, ensuring high-quality timber reaches our clients with maximum efficiency.

Streamline your supply chain by dealing directly with our Cape distribution hub.
Specialised Solutions: Pull Scar Poleplant
Located in White River, Mpumalanga, our Pull Scar manufacturing facility plays a pivotal role in enhancing the value of our pole product offering. As a specialised pole plant, we supply a wide range of CCA and Creosote treated poles manufactured to perform in the most demanding environments.

From vineyard and structural netting poles for the agricultural sector to essential utility poles for telecommunications and power transmission, Pull Scar delivers it all. Our ownership of internationally accredited eucalyptus plantations gives us a unique competitive edge, ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality poles for fencing, construction, and infrastructure.
Treatment and Dimensional Stability
Timber treatment plays a critical role in our manufacturing process, ensuring long-term performance. CCA treatment protects timber against biological deterioration such as insect attack and fungal decay — a key factor for long-term performance in coastal and high-moisture environments. Clear Vacsol Azure Treatment offers an alternative for specific applications, providing protection while maintaining a more natural timber appearance.

Our treatment facilities in Retreat (Cape Town) and White River (Mpumalanga) ensure timber is treated to the required standards before dispatch, supporting consistent quality across regions.

By utilising a high-precision finger-jointing line at our George Sawmill, we are able to produce structural timber in longer lengths for maximum stability and longevity.

Beyond the convenience of spanning greater distances, the finger-jointing process enhances the dimensional stability of the timber. By interlocking the fibers, it reduces the natural internal tensions that lead to twisting and warping. For contractors and builders, this means working with more reliable material that maintains its integrity, ensuring a superior, lasting finish for every project.
A Circular Economy: Powering the Future
Our George Sawmill drives manufacturing excellence through a circular economy, transforming biomass from forestry residues and manufacturing by-products into the energy that powers our production. Sawdust and woodchips are fed into our boilers to create the steam required for kiln-drying our timber. This same steam drives our turbine, generating 60–70% of the mill’s electricity.

We are proud to reduce our carbon footprint while ensuring a consistent production cycle.
