Community Development in the Cape: Forestry SMME partnership

At MTO Group, our commitment to community development in the Cape is embedded in the way we operate. By partnering with local SMMEs such as Storms River Contractors, we strengthen our forestry value chain while creating long-term employment opportunities in surrounding communities. These partnerships support both sustainable plantation management and economic resilience across the region.

One of the most meaningful ways we achieve this is through partnerships with small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) that provide essential services within our core operations. These partnerships not only strengthen our value chain — they create employment, transfer skills, and build long-term economic resilience in local communities.

A Partnership Rooted in Community Development in the Cape

Storms River Contractors is one such partner. The company is led by a respected and dynamic duo fondly known in the community as “Oom Simone” and "Auntie Dorah.”

What began as a service provider relationship has grown into something far more significant. Over the years, Storms River Contractors has created permanent employment for 45 individuals from the Tsitsikamma communities — many of whom are primary breadwinners supporting their households.

Each job represents more than employment. It represents stability and opportunity for families in the region.

Supporting Sustainable Forestry from the Ground Up

The services provided by Storms River Contractors are vital to the long-term sustainability of our plantations. Their team plays a key role in ensuring the healthy growth and development of our trees through:

  • Soil preparation for planting

  • Pitting and planting

  • Fertilising and weeding

  • Land conservation practices

These activities form the foundation of sustainable forestry management. By investing in skilled local contractors, we ensure that our plantations are nurtured responsibly while creating real economic value within the surrounding communities.

At MTO Group, creating sustainable plantations and creating sustainable communities go hand in hand — because responsible forestry is not just about trees. It’s about people.
